IULM University is proud to present a screening of Philip Solomon’s EMPIRE.
"Phil Solomon’s “EMPIRE” (2008–2012) is considerably shorter than the 1964 Andy Warhol film on which it is based—a mere 48 minutes as opposed to Warhol’s endurance-testing eight hours—though in the videogame world in which “EMPIRE” takes place, the film amounts to a full day, passing through rain, sunset, night, and, come the following afternoon, the return of stormy weather. Like the four films of his In Memoriam, Mark LaPore series (for which this and an earlier installation version serve as a coda), “EMPIRE” was machinima-made in various editions of Grand Theft Auto, a game franchise notorious for its glorification of prostitution, crime, and murder. From Solomon’s lofty vantage, however, the mayhem is but a distant din of traffic on the city streets below. Perched on a skyscraper ledge, in an elaborate choreography of avatar, camera, and encoded “cheats,” Solomon allows us to gaze, as Warhol did, at the building across the way: “Rotterdam Tower,” or what is more recognizable as the Empire State Building." Philip Solomon (1954, USA) is an experimental filmmaker, who has been making films since 1975. He received an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and is currently Professor of Film Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He worked with Stan Brakhage and has directed countless experimental films. He has exhibited his films in numerous venues for experimental film around the world, such as Whitney Biennials and three one-man shows at MoMA.

L'università IULM è orgogliosa di presenta una proiezione integrale della monumentale opera di Philip Solomon, EMPIRE.
"EMPIRE di Phil Solomon (2008-2012) ha una durata assai inferiore alla pellicola di Andy Warhol del 1964 che insieme omaggia e da cui trae diretta ispirazione: 48 minuti contro quella prova di resistenza di 485 minuti del celebre artista pop, anche se nel mondo virtuale in cui è ambientato EMPIRE, la proiezione 'dura' un'intera giornata, scandita dal susseguirsi di pioggia, pioggia, tramonto, notte, fino al pomeriggio del giorno seguente, contraddistinto dal ritorno della tempesta. Al pari dei quattro film della serie In Memoriam (di cui questo video rappresenta una coda, o epilogo), EMPIRE è stato realizzato con Grand Theft Auto, un videogame noto per la sua celebrazione ironica della violenza, della prostituzione, della criminalità e della violenza. Dal punto di vista di Solomon, tuttavia, il caos si riduce a un frastuono lontano, a rumore di fondo. Arroccata su una sporgenza del grattacielo, la sua macchina da presa restituisce uno sguardo fisso, emulando quella di Warhol, osservando immobile l'edificio dall'altro lato della strada: la Rotterdam Tower è l'equivalente ludico dell'Empire State Building." Nato nel 1954 a New York, Philip Solomon è un regista sperimentale sin dal 1975. Ha ricevuto un MFA dal Massachusetts College of Art ed è Professore di Filmologia presso l’Università del Colorado a Boulder. Ha collaborato con Stan Brakhage e ha diretto innumerevoli film sperimentali. Le sue opere sono state presentate nei più importanti festival e rassegne di cinema d'avanguardia del mondo, tra cui diverse Whitney Biennial e tre mostre personali al MoMA di New York.
